This month (last month but who’s counting), instead of a blog, I made a video. I felt like talking more than writing.
Which is unfortunate, because my mic thinks it’s a dog walker.
That is, it picks up everything. Clinks, creaks, screeches, near and far, the whole nine yards, yessir it’s on there, on the audio file attached to the video I snipped in iMovie, so much noise it just melts into a wash of static that you almost forget about until I trim a segment, creating a momentary skip in the audio, 0.04 seconds of absolute silence, imperceptible but impossible to miss, enough for anyone to remember how un-silent the rest of the video is.
I almost just put ambient coffee shop noises over the whole thing to cover it up.
But here was the payoff of filming at the edge of an open window: I got dramatic lighting. I propped my phone, front-facing, in a groove in the sill just so, and, reading my script off my laptop which was on my suitcase (for height) on my bed where I knelt, I got the sunlight on my face while darkening out my hotel room backdrop.
Consider it an experiment in visual arts, at the expense of your ears.
In any case: I had something to say!
Something which, my gut tells me, may be of interest to only a select few readers (my faves xo).
So, a video about social sciences. It’s what’s for dinner.
We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled travel writing in no time.
Until then, enjoy:
